Musculoskeletal Genomics and Aging Research
Beta blockers to prevent postmenopausal bone loss
- Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying the bone effects of these drugs
- Understanding the genetic and molecular determinants of treatment response and tolerability
Bone Pathology in Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD)
- What is the connection between bone and neurological outcomes in Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementias (ADRD)?
- Bone-based biomarkers for ADRD prediction or therapeutic targets
Collaborations in Health and Genomics
- Use of molecular epidemiological data sources to propose translational applications of genes and pathways
- Statistical study design and collaboration with basic and clinical researchers
Proposed mechanisms of beta blockers in bone cells
A. BBs target βARs in both osteoblasts and osteoclasts with hypothesized regulation by miRNAs.
B. Pharmacogenetic variants (red stars) in β1AR and HDAC4 in osteoblasts and β2AR in osteoclastsdisrupt β1AR or β2AR binding to BBs or influence HDAC4 expression, causing osteoblast-mediated or direct changes in osteoclast differentiation and resorption.
